An American woman says that Twinings of London brand tea is falsely represented in that country, claiming that the product sold to US consumers does not come from England anymore.

Lead plaintiff Patricia Mangels filed a class action lawsuit seeking to represent other consumers who purchased Twinings of London-brand products that were not made in England. She accuses the Delaware-based company, Twinings North America, Inc, of deceptively marketing the product as coming from the UK.

“[W]hile British consumers can continue to enjoy Twinings tea from England (Twinings maintains a British factory for the British market), Twinings tea sold outside of England is now from China and Poland”, claims the Twinings tea class action lawsuit.

Indeed, Mangels says that she purchased Twinings of London tea on several occasions from a Walmart in her hometown of Boonville, Missouri. She says that she relied on representations on the products packaging, paying more for tea she claims she thought came from England.

Mangels points out that Twinings tea bears three representations about the source of the product: the “Twinings of London” brand name, a London address, and the following statement: “By Appointment To Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II Tea and Coffee Merchants R. Twining and Company Limited, London.”

Despite these representations, Twinings of London products sold outside of the UK are made in either Poland or China, alleges the Twinings tea class action lawsuit. Mangels says that she and other consumers would not have purchased or paid as much for the tea had they not been duped by the company.

“There is a strong connection between England and tea”, states the Twinings tea class action lawsuit, which notes that the Twinings brand, founded in England 1706, still dominates the world market today. However, despite highlighting connections between its tea and England, Twinings stopped exporting teas from England to the United States, alleges the plaintiff.

Mangels accuses Twinings of capitalising on its deception of US consumers. She wants to represent a Class of Missouri residents who purchased Twinings bagged tea products and wants the court to award damages on their behalf. The plaintiff also wants the alleged false advertising of Twinings of London brand tea to stop.

Twinings has faced allegations of false advertising before. Between 2012 and 2016, the company fought a California class action lawsuit alleging it falsely representing the health benefits of more than 50 different blends of its teas.
