Nestlé is recalling its infant formula products, including SMA, BEBA and NAN, in nearly 50 countries due to potential contamination with cereulide, a toxin produced by Bacillus cereus.
The toxic contaminant can lead to symptoms such as abdominal pain, stomach cramps, watery diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, the Nestlé recall states.
The global and UK recall, initiated in December, is a precautionary measure to ensure the safety and well-being of infants consuming these Nestlé infant formula products.
The affected regions include Europe, Turkey, Argentina and several other countries; notably, the United States is not on the list of affected areas.
The company says it has also inspected the arachidonic acid (ARA) oil and related oil blends used in the production of the affected formulas and has activated alternative suppliers to mitigate any potential supply disruptions.
Nestlé recall: Parents and caregivers should not use affected products
The recall notice advises parents and caregivers to discontinue the use of the affected Nestlé infant formula products immediately and to consult healthcare providers if any symptoms of illness appear in their children.
Symptoms typically manifest between 30 minutes and six hours after exposure to the toxin.
“No illnesses have been confirmed in connection with the products involved to date,” the recall notice says, underscoring that the measure is precautionary.
Nestlé is actively working with authorities in the affected countries to ensure all necessary steps are taken to protect consumers. The company is also conducting a full root-cause analysis in collaboration with its oil supplier to prevent future occurrences of such contamination.
Consumers seeking more information about the Nestlé infant formula recall can visit their local Nestlé website or the product brand website for details on how to identify affected products and instructions for obtaining a refund.
Nestlé says it has not received any reports of illness or injury related to the recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the Nestlé recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to a Nestlé infant formula class action lawsuit.
