Nestlé baby formula recall overview:
- Who: Nestlé is recalling several batches of SMA Infant Formula and Follow-On Formula.
- Why: The recall is due to the potential presence of cereulide, a toxin.
- Where: The recall is effective in the United Kingdom.
Nestlé has initiated an extended recall of various SMA Infant Formula and Follow-On Formula products due to concerns over the possible presence of cereulide toxin.
This precautionary measure affects multiple batches of the products, which are distributed across the United Kingdom. The recall was updated on Feb. 3, 2026, to include new expiry dates for the affected batches.
The products involved include SMA Advanced First Infant Milk, SMA Advanced Follow-On Milk, SMA Anti Reflux, SMA ALFAMINO and several others, with varying batch codes and best-before dates extending into 2027.
Baby formula maker Danone has also recalled one batch of Aptamil First Infant Formula.
The presence of cereulide, a toxin produced by Bacillus cereus, poses a risk as it is highly heat stable and can lead to symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and abdominal cramps if consumed.
“Even if you have not identified ill-health in your baby as a result of consumption of this product, it is essential to stop using it,” the recall notice advises. “The toxin is unlikely to be deactivated or destroyed by cooking, using boiling water or when making the infant milk.”
Parents urged to check for recalled baby formula
The recall notice emphasizes the importance of parents and caregivers checking their homes for any of the recalled formula products. Cereulide toxin poisoning can cause symptoms that appear rapidly, sometimes within 15 minutes to six hours after ingestion.
The recall affects multiple regions, with 36 children across the United Kingdom reported to have developed symptoms consistent with the toxin, including vomiting and stomach cramps.
Nestlé is actively working to address the issue by recalling the affected products and displaying point-of-sale notices in retail stores.
Customers are advised to take a photo of the product and batch code and contact Nestlé for a refund. Additionally, Nestlé has provided a tool on its website to help consumers identify affected batches.
For more information, consumers can visit the Nestle UK website or call the careline at 0800 0 81 81 80.
This effort is part of a global recall that affected Europe, Turkey, Argentina and several other countries, but not the United States.
So far, there have been 36 reports of possible toxic effects. Nestlé is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
