The Competition and Markets Authority announced it is investigating Ticketmaster over the way it handled ticket sales for Oasis reunion concerts.
The watchdog says it is concerned Ticketmaster used so-called dynamic pricing to trick fans of the rock band into paying more for their tickets by putting them under pressure to buy them in a short period of time, Law360 reports.
The CMA reportedly wants to determine whether the use of dynamic pricing, which increases ticket prices in accordance with demand, violates consumer protection laws.
“It’s important that fans are treated fairly when they buy tickets, which is why we’ve launched this investigation,” The AP reports CMA Chief Executive Sarah Cardell as saying in a statement.
CMA says is is worried Oasis fans paid more than expected for tickets
The CMA says it is concerned fans of the reunited ‘90s rock band paid a higher price than they understood they would have to pay as a result of being put under pressure to buy the tickets in a short time.
“It’s clear that many people felt they had a bad experience and were surprised by the price of their tickets at checkout,” the AP reports Cardell as saying.
Consumers who bought Oasis concert tickets from Ticketmaster have been asked to provide the CMA with evidence of any issues they had during the buying process so the agency can determine whether they received enough information, Law360 reports.
The Oasis concerts are scheduled to take place next July and August in Cardiff, Manchester, London, Edinburgh and Dublin. The band, which consists of brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher, previously split up more than 15 years ago.
“Consumer law is clear — ticket sales sites must be transparent in their dealings with consumers and give clear and accurate information about the price people have to pay,” Law360 reports the CMA saying.
The Information Commissioner’s Office previously fined Ticketmaster £1.25 million in November 2020 following a data breach that exposed the personal information of millions of consumers.
