Lord Mayor Treloar Haemophilia Blood Lawsuit Overview:

  • Who: Thirty-six former students of Lord Mayor Treloar school in Alton are suing the school.
  • Why: The former students allege more than 72 alumni have died after having been infected with Hepatitis A, B and C or HIV as a result of receiving contaminated blood while being treated at the school.
  • Where: The school is in Hampshire.

A group of former students who contracted a blood disease while being treated at a Hampshire school are suing, saying at least 72 alumni have died as a result of receiving contaminated blood while being treated at the school.

On behalf of a group of 36 former students and representatives of former students, Collins Solicitors recently lodged an application for a Group Litigation Order against the school, Lord Mayor Treloar in Alton, Daily Echo reports.

The former students allege that Lord Mayor Treloar failed its duty of care to its pupils with haemophilia in the 1970s and 1980s.

They say, since then, more than 72 alumni of the school have died after having been infected with Hepatitis A, B and C or HIV as a result of receiving contaminated blood whilst being treated at the school.

Those who didn’t die have also suffered poor health all their lives, as well as other debilitating consequences, the plaintiffs allege.

Pupils Say They Suffered Physical, Psychological, Psychiatric Harm As Result Of Treatment

Lead plaintiff Gary Webster, 56, said the headmaster and other teachers didn’t seem to want to know what was being injected into pupils during their time in the school’s care.

“No one at the school seemed to show the slightest curiosity over what treatment was being prescribed to us young kids nor, I now know, did they seek parental permission. It beggars belief,” he said.

The former pupils allege they suffered physical, psychological and psychiatric harm arising from the haemophilia treatment provided to them without their informed consent or that of their parents. They also say the treatment risks were not explained.

“We have witnessed the deaths of so many friends while experiencing truly awful life-affecting consequences as a result of unnecessarily contracting these illnesses, is really difficult to comprehend and accept,” Webster said.

The plaintiffs are seeking damages for their alleged suffering. The case comes after new evidence was presented in 2021 at the Infected Blood Inquiry into the incident.

Collins Senior Partner Des Collins said the “harrowing stories” from surviving pupils made for uncomfortable listening.

“Where were even the most basic of safeguards for these children when they were pumped full of blood products of clearly dubious origin?” Collins said.
