- Why: Neill accused Sony of overcharging consumers by as much as £5 billion by imposing a 30% commission charge on any digital game purchase from the Playstation Store or an in-game purchase.
- Where: The lawsuit has been filed with the UK’s Competition Appeal Tribunal.
Sony overcharged consumers by as much as £5 billion during the last six years by imposing a 30% commission on digital game purchases on its Playstation Store in addition to in-game purchases, a new lawsuit alleges.
The lawsuit has been filed with the Competition Appeal Tribunal on behalf of as many as 9 million consumers in the UK who have either purchased a digital game from the PS Store or made an in-game purchase since Aug. 19, 2016, LADbible reports.
Alex Neill, who is bringing the Playstation lawsuit against Sony, says he seeks to recover a total of £5 billion in compensation with claimants potentially entitled to between £67 and £562 each, excluding any interest.
Sony is accused of violating competition law by allegedly charging the 30% commissions, which the PlayStation lawsuit claims are “unfair terms and conditions” for publishers and game developers that end up driving up prices.
PlayStation lawsuit alleges Sony has ‘near monopoly’ on digital game sales on Playstation Store
“The game is up for Sony PlayStation,” Neill says in a statement. “With this legal action, I am standing up for the millions of UK people who have been unwittingly overcharged. We believe Sony has abused its position and ripped off its customers.”
The PlayStation lawsuit alleges Sony violates competition law due to its alleged “near monopoly on the sale of digital games and add-on content through its control of the PlayStation Store,” according to the official website for the legal action.
“We believe that customers are paying too much for these digital products and that they deserve to be treated better by Sony and compensated,” the website states.
Last month, a federal judge in California tossed out a class action lawsuit accusing Sony of monopolizing the sale of Playstation games and charging consumers a supracompetitive price for them.
