Bitcoin inventor ruling overview:

  • Who: A London High Court judge ruled Australian computer scientist Craig Wright is not the creator of bitcoin, as he has long claimed.
  • Why: The ruling ends a lawsuit the Crypto Open Patent Alliance filed against Wright to stop him from filing lawsuits against bitcoin developers.
  • Where: The case was heard in London’s High Court.

An Australian computer scientist claiming he was the one to invent bitcoin is not telling the truth, according to a judge in London’s High Court.

Judge James Mellor ruled Craig Wright is not Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonym under which a 2008 whitepaper outlining bitcoin was published, Reuters reports

The Crypto Open Patent Alliance (COPA) filed the lawsuit to prevent Wright from continuing to file lawsuits against bitcoin developers.

COPA asked the London High Court to rule Wright is not the creator of the cryptocurrency, Judge Mellor says there was overwhelming evidence to support the fact, Reuters writes.

“Dr Wright is not the author of the bitcoin white paper,” Reuters reports Mellor as saying. “Dr Wright is not the person who adopted or operated under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto in the period 2008 to 2011.”

COPA touts ruling as win for the truth

COPA says the judge’s ruling was “a win for developers, for the entire open source community and for the truth,” according to Reuters, while a spokesperson for Wright reportedly says he is not prepared to speak on the ruling.

The group claimed Wright forged documents to substantiate his claim as the creator of bitcoin and asked Mellor to refer the case to Britain’s Crown Prosecution Service to consider prosecuting Wright for perjury.

Wright reportedly denied he forged documents, while his lawyers argued he produced clear evidence that showed he authored bitcoin’s whitepaper as Satoshi Nakamoto and created bitcoin, Reuters reports.

In 2023, the Financial Conduct Authority began enforcing a proclamation making crypto ATM operation illegal.
