Accupro Pfizer Hypertension Carcinogen Recall Overview:

  • Who: Pfizer Limited is recalling all batches of its blood pressure drug Accupro in 5 mg, 10 mg, 20 mg and 40 mg film-coated tablets.
  • Why: Pfizer discovered the carcinogen nitrosamine at higher-than-acceptable limits in the tablets.
  • Where: The recall is nationwide.

Pfizer is recalling all batches of its blood pressure medication Accupro in 5 mg, 10 mg, 20 mg and 40 mg film-coated tablets after testing revealed they contain higher-than-acceptable levels of N Nitroso-quinapril, a nitrosamine and a potential carcinogen. The recall notice was posted May 5 on the UK government website.

“Nitrosamines may increase the risk of cancer if people are exposed to them above acceptable levels and over long periods of time,” the recall states.

The recall is at the pharmacy and wholesaler levels. Pfizer asks healthcare professionals to quarantine all remaining stock of the specified batches and return them to the supplier using the approved process.

The company said there is no immediate risk to patients who have been taking this medication. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

Pfizer Accupro Recall Says Patients Should Not Stop Using Product Without Talking Doctor

Patients undergoing treatment should not stop using Accupro without consulting with their prescriber as there are potential risks associated with suddenly stopping treatment for blood pressure.

Pfizer said it is aware of the current supply constraints related to the blood pressure product and working to resolve the issue and resume manufacturing.

The news comes after a similar recall in the United states in which Pfizer voluntarily recalled five lots of its hypertension drug Accupril (Quinapril HCL) tablets over concerns they also contain a higher-than-acceptable level of N Nitroso-quinapril.
