A range of pork scratchings are being recalled in the United Kingdom amid a Salmonella outbreak that has sickened almost 180 people since September last year.
Last week, the UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) issued an alert advising consumers not to eat several pork scratching products made by Tayto Group Ltd, which have been linked to salmonella poisoning.
The affected brands include some Mr Porky, Jay’s and The Real Pork Crackling Company products, with an expiration date of Feb. 2022. A full list of recalled products is available here.
“Testing has found a link to 176 reported cases of salmonella poisoning across the UK between September 2020 and the present date,” the FSA said. At least 12 of those cases have required hospitalisation, the Associated Press reports.
The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits
The FSA said production was voluntarily halted at the Bolton factory linked to the outbreak once a possible link between the outbreak and the factory was first identified earlier this month.
Public Health England Surveillance Lead Dr. Lesley Larkin said the Gastrointestinal Pathogens Unit had established a link between the 176 cases of Salmonella poisoning based on an analysis of data obtained through whole genome sequencing and epidemiological investigations.
“These investigations, together with those carried out by local authorities, have indicated the source of infection is pork scratchings produced by a single company in the UK,” she said.
“The Food Standards Agency has acted on these findings to mitigate any further risk to public health from the contaminated food.”
She said anybody with concerns they have symptoms of salmonellosis should contact their GP or call NHS 111.
Symptoms of salmonellosis include diarrhoea, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting and fever, the FSA said. However, symptoms can be more severe and lead to hospitalisation, especially in the very young and those with weakened immune systems.
“We are advising consumers not to eat any of the products listed in the FSA alert. It is really important that consumers follow this advice to avoid the risk of becoming ill with salmonella poisoning,” FSA Head of Incidents Tina Potter said.
The news has also had a global impact, with pork scratchings also being recalled in Canada out of an abundance of caution. Mr. Porky pork scratchings are also distributed and sold in Canada.
