In a statement, the Food Standards Agency said: “Pancytopenia is a very rare condition wherein the number of blood cells (red, white and platelets) rapidly decreases, causing serious illness.”

The fatal illness is caused by toxic compounds that are produced by different types of fungi, and it can cause weight loss, loss of appetite, and a decrease in healthy blood cells leading to infections and/or bleeding.

A Royal Veterinary College spokesperson said in a statement that currently it was aware of over 500 affected cats.

“Investigations into an underlying cause do not suggest a link with common feline infectious diseases, common toxins (e.g., heavy metals, oestrogen) or deficiencies/excesses in vitamins or minerals.”

The agency added that it was continuing its investigation into the sudden increase in Feline Pancytopenia in cats in the UK.

The recall follows a June recall from Fold Hill Foods over the same condition in cats. The company had to recall several of its hypoallergenic cat foods after reports that the products may be causing a rare and deadly bone marrow condition in pets.

The Food Standards Agency and Fold Hill Foods said the recall was a “precautionary action” due to “safety concerns” and extended to dozens of cat food products under the Sainsbury, Applaws, and Pets at Home brands.
