Google faces a class action lawsuit accusing it of taking an excessive 30 percent cut from app purchases made on its Google Play Store, following a similar case filed against Apple earlier this year.
The Class includes any person who at any point from 1 October 2015 made purchases of an app or digital content, services, or subscriptions within an app (excluding Google apps) in the U.K. version of the Google Play Store using an Android smartphone or tablet on which the Google Play Store was pre-installed.
With this 30 percent cut, Google allegedly violated both U.K. and European competition laws, overcharging millions of users who are left with little alternative but to pay because the Google Play Store comes pre-installed on their devices, according to the BBC.
The class action lawsuit seeks damages of up to £920 million and affects about 19.5 million Android phone users in the U.K., the BBC reported.
A similar class action lawsuit was launched against Apple in May.
Class Members in the Apple App Store class action include anyone who, at any point during the period between 1 October 2015 and the date of final judgment or earlier settlement of the proposed collective claim, made for themselves and/or another person, one or more purchases of an app, digital content, services, or subscriptions within an app (excluding Apple apps) from an iPhone or iPad in the U.K. version of the Apple App Store.
The Apple App Store class action lawsuit seeks £1.5 billion for about 19.6 million Class Members.
The Apple App Store and Google Play Store claims share an informational website for those seeking to file claims.
