People are being warned to not consume a dangerous ‘fat burner’ diet pill after numerous fatalities were reported.
The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) announced the recall on Feb. 1, for all weight loss capsules that contain 2,4-Dinitrophenol (DNP), a highly toxic chemical that is not meant for human consumption, according to a statement made on the FSAI’s website.
A quantity of the capsules, which were sold on www.FatBurney.com, have been seized by the FSAI after an investigation discovered the presence of DNP.
DNP is a yellow powder that has a variety of industrial uses, including a photographic chemical, a fertiliser and being used in the production of dyes and explosives, according to BBC News.
Despite its industrial use, it is frequently sold to consumers as a weight loss aid, due to its ability to burn fat and carbohydrates. People who take the drug often experience an increase in heart rate and body temperature, along with dizziness and vomiting, which can be deadly.
“Of all of the poisons that we deal with, DNP is the one that causes the highest proportion of fatalities. It’s extremely dangerous,” Simon Thomas, professor of clinical pharmacology and therapeutics at Newcastle University said to BBC.
The FSAI stated that a number of fatalities have been recorded after use of the DNP products.
Individuals who purchased any capsules containing DNP via www.FatBurney.com or any other website or social media source, are advised to not consume the product.
If you believe you have been adversely affected by the product, seek medical attention immediately.
Consumers who have further questions about the recall, or are unsure about what to do with any existing products that may have purchased, can call the Food Safety Authority advice line on 1890 33 66 77, or contact the authority via email at info@fsai.ie.
In the past weight loss pills have been linked to a range of negative side effects. Belviq (lorcaserin) is a weight loss pill that has been associated with an increased risk of numerous types of cancer, according to a recent safety clinical trial.
