A patient recall has been issued following concerns about a consultant urologist at a Northern Ireland hospital.

An unknown number of patients who were treated at Craigavon Area Hospital have been contacted about the recall involving a senior consultant urologist’s work.

An investigation into the consultant’s work at Craigavon Area Hospital was initiated this summer, The Irish News reported. The consultant retired in June but worked at Craigavon Area Hospital for a considerable length of time, The Irish News reported.

There may be hundreds of immediately recalled patients from the Craigavon Area Hospital, according to The Irish News.

A spokeswoman for Craigavon Area Hospital confirmed the investigation commenced due to concerns about the senior consultant urologist’s work.

The spokeswoman was not able to comment on specifics of the Craigavon Area Hospital’s recall but confirmed to The Irish News that a limited amount of affected patients have been contacted about the issue.

Any patients in the Craigavon Area Hospital recall have been provided with a telephone number.

The spokeswoman issued a statement about the Craigavon Area Hospital recall, according to The Irish News.

“We can confirm that clinical concerns in relation to the work of a consultant urologist, who no longer works in the health service, are currently being reviewed,” she said. “At this stage, a small number of patients have been contacted so that their care can be reviewed.”

Health Minister Robin Swann said the Craigavon Area Hospital recall was an immediate concern, the BBC reported.

“An internal exercise was immediately initiated by the trust and is ongoing in order to ascertain the number of patients whose care may need to be reviewed,” Swann said. “I am extremely concerned about any issue that involves the potential for patients to come to harm within our Health and Social Care system.”

Swann added: “However, it is important to stress that the vast majority of urology patients in the Southern Trust will be unaffected by the issues that have come to light.”

Swann insisted the Craigavon Area Hospital investigation would be extensive and any patients involved would receive reviews of their care and would be contacted as soon as possible.

Armagh I reported the health minister was concerned about potential harm caused to some patients at Craigavon Area Hospital.

“My department’s immediate priority is to ensure that the Southern Trust completes this initial phase of work in the weeks ahead in order to minimise and prevent any potential risk or harm to patients,” Swann told Armagh I. “My Department has therefore established a Urology Assurance Group to provide external oversight to the Southern Trust’s ongoing process, and the future management plan for the issues arising from it.”

“The Assurance Group comprises senior officials from the Department of Health, Health and Social Care Board, Public Health Agency, Regulation and Quality Improvement Authority, as well as the Southern Trust,” Swann continued. “I will publish final terms of reference for the Assurance Group alongside my Assembly statement.”

About a month ago, Swann ordered a probe into the Northern Ireland health trust after a coronavirus outbreak on a Craigavon haematology ward was linked to six patient deaths, according to The Irish News. Six additional patients died at Daisy Hill hospital in Newry after a Covid cluster was discovered. Daisy Hill is also managed by the Northern Ireland health trust.

And two years ago, nearly 3,000 neurology patients were recalled and re-examined after concerns they were misdiagnosed or received incorrect treatments.
