Sainsbury’s, Waitrose recall pitted black olives over Listeria contamination

Sainsbury’s is recalling its Inspired to Cook by Sainsbury’s Pitted Black Olives, and Waitrose is separately recalling its Waitrose Essential Pitted Black Olives, according to notices filed with the Food Standards Agency (FSA). Both products are sold in 120g packs and have been pulled from sale due to the presence of Listeria monocytogenes.

The Sainsbury’s recall, filed under reference FSA-PRIN-43-2026, was issued on Sept. 4 and covers packs with use-by dates of Sept. 6, 7 and 10.

The Waitrose recall, filed under reference FSA-PRIN-44-2026, was issued on Sept. 10 and covers packs with use-by dates of Sept. 13, 18 and 27. This recall is specific to England, Scotland and Wales.

According to the FSA, symptoms linked to Listeria monocytogenes can resemble flu, including a high temperature, muscle aches, chills, and feeling or being sick, along with diarrhoea. Those most at risk include people over 65, pregnant women and their unborn babies, babies under one month old, and people with weakened immune systems.

Sainsbury’s, Waitrose shoppers eligible for full refunds

Shoppers who have bought either product are advised not to eat it. Both retailers say affected packs can be returned to any of their stores for a full refund, and point-of-sale notices are being displayed in stores that stocked the products.

Consumers can view the full recall notices, including product images, on the FSA’s alerts database. For the Sainsbury’s recall, consumers can visit Sainsburys.co.uk/help or call the retailer’s careline on 0800 028 8303. Waitrose customers can contact Waitrose Customer Care on 0800 188 884 and select call option 4.

Sainsbury’s and Waitrose have not reported any illnesses linked to the recalls so far. The companies are not currently facing legal action over the recalls, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

In August, Tesco recalled a mozzarella and pesto salad due to fears of E. coli contamination.
