Ticket resale site StubHub has added a warning on its website letting consumers know that resold tickets could be invalid.

A probe by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) forced StubHub to clarify the terms on their ticket resale website as to not mislead customers.

After a consumer law investigation, StubHub was urged to follow through on new commitments to clarify some confusing information on their website, FR24 News reported.

When the concerns were not properly addressed to its standards, the CMA took action. The CMA urged StubHub to clean up its act and add warnings on its website for consumers’ clarity.

The CMA is now content with StubHub, as it has shown evidence that it has added a sufficient warning and other pertinent information on its website.

The warning explicitly tells customers that some tickets might not be usable at an event.

The CMA had other requirements for StubHub, too.

The CMA urged StubHub to:

  • Provide an adequate warning that tickets purchased on the U.K. website might not be valid at the event;
  • Remove erroneous statements about ticket availability;
  • Stop advertising overseas events that may not be compatible with U.K. consumer law;
  • Ensure ticketholders are clear about where they are sitting at an event;
  • Guarantee that business sellers’ addresses are visible.

StubHub adding these warnings and clarifications helps consumers be certain what they are buying. The CMA’s urgency for transparency allows StubHub customers to not be misled.

New problems noted by consumers have been reported to the CMA about ticket resale websites like StubHub during the coronavirus pandemic.

Events have been cancelled, and concerns about refunds or rescheduling have been abundant. The CMA has been taking action to endure consumer protection laws are being followed by ticket resale companies.

The CMA says StubHub was asserting that tickets were rarer than they really were, among other misleading claims on the website.

U.K. ticketing security expert Reg Walker believes the CMA should have taken legal action against StubHub and other ticket resale sites, The Guardian reported.

“These companies have summarily been allowed to fleece consumers for years and years,” Walker told The Guardian. “[Consumers] are not receiving any protection under consumer protection law. They’re essentially being thrown under the bus.”

In response to the criticism, a CMA spokesperson said StubHub is being held accountable to comply and has complied without the need for legal action.

The CMA says if StubHub refuses to meet the requirements, then legal action will be taken.

Similar warnings from the CMA were also given to other ticket resale companies likes Viagogo. The CMA is continuing to monitor ticket resale companies to be on the lookout for violations of consumer protection law during the coronavirus pandemic.

For now, the CMA is pleased with StubHub’s adherence to the warnings.

StubHub has changed many things on the website for better user experience. Now, in addition to receiving the warning about the validity of tickets, customers will know where they will sit at a venue and will not be exposed to false advertisements.

“We are pleased that the CMA has confirmed that StubHub has addressed the CMA’s concerns,” a StubHub spokeswoman told the Belfast Telegraph. “We have worked closely with the CMA to evolve our site in the best interest of our customers. As a fan-first marketplace, StubHub has always cooperated closely with regulators and will continue to do so, appreciating the dynamic regulatory environment in which we operate.”
