Johnson & Johnson talc class action lawsuit overview:

  • Who: British consumers plan to sue Johnson & Johnson
  • Why: The plaintiffs say the company’s talc products caused UK customers to develop cancer.
  • Where: The Johnson & Johnson cancer class action lawsuit will be filed in the UK.

British consumers are preparing to file a class action lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson, alleging the pharmaceutical giant continued making and selling talc products that caused them to develop cancer even after it stopped selling the products in the United States.

Texas-based litigator Mark Lanier set up a firm in the UK and is set to file a British class action lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson, City A.M. reports.

The lawsuit will claim that thousands of British people may have developed cancer due to exposure to asbestos in Johnson & Johnson and other pharmaceutical companies’ talc products.

The news comes after the Houston-based Lanier Law Firm secured a $4.69 billion verdict for 22 women and their families in 2018 after showing that decades of Johnson & Johnson baby powder use caused ovarian cancer in the plaintiffs.

Johnson & Johnson announced in May 2020 it was pulling its talc-based baby powder from shelves and stopping all sales in the United States and Canada. This decision came after thousands of Johnson & Johnson talc lawsuits alleging the product causes cancer.

However, around the same time, it was reported that Johnson & Johnson would continue to sell its baby powder in the United Kingdom despite halting sales of the product in North America.

Johnson & Johnson class action lawsuit will involve other pharma companies

In the UK lawsuit, plaintiffs are set to argue that pharmaceutical giants, including J&J, continued to sell products to British consumers despite having known about the presence of asbestos fibers in those products for decades, Lanier said in a statement.

“Companies have made many millions from the sales of its talc, and we believe there are many more victims, including in the UK, who deserve justice for having their lives cut short by these terrible and incurable cancers, which could so easily have been avoided,” he says.

Johnson & Johnson announced in August that it had plans to stop selling talc products in all markets worldwide by 2023.

At the time, the firm said in a statement that its “position on the safety of our cosmetic talc remains unchanged.”

“We continue to stand firmly behind the safety of talc-based Johnson’s Baby Powder and are confident in the merits of our legal position,” Johnson & Johnson told City A.M.

Multiple baby powder cancer lawsuits have resulted in massive awards from juries for women and their families, who alleged the regular use of talcum powder products caused their ovarian cancer or mesothelioma.
