OnePlus allegedly did not announce the data breach until a week after it occurred. OnePlus has not commented on how many customers had information stolen.

A group action claim has been launched over a OnePlus data breach that violated customers’ private information. 

OnePlus, a Chinese technology company, was the victim of a data breach in November 2019, according to Forbes. The breach allegedly exposed customers’ private information including contact details, names and addresses.

The company confirmed hackers accessed personal details but reported that financial details were not breached, Forbes reported.

“We want to update you that we have discovered that some of our users’ order information was accessed by an unauthorized party,” OnePlus said in a statement on its website after the data breach. “We can confirm that all payment information, passwords and accounts are safe, but certain users’ name, contact number, email and shipping address may have been exposed. Impacted users may receive spam and phishing emails as a result of this incident.”

OnePlus’ statement continued: “We took immediate steps to stop the intruder and reinforce security. Before making this public, we informed our impacted users by email. Right now, we are working with the relevant authorities to further investigate this incident.

“We are deeply sorry about this, and are committed to doing everything in our power to prevent further such incidents.”

Customers were notified of the data breach by email around 22 November 2019. Customers who did not receive an email did not have information accessed in the attack, Forbes said.

OnePlus logo - oneplus data breachAccording to Forbes, OnePlus has not confirmed how many of its customers had information accessed in the data breach. It is thought the attack happened through the online store, not through OnePlus smartphones.

Any customers involved in the OnePlus data breach should be on the lookout for spam and phishing emails. When hackers steal personal information, many times it is used to perpetuate scams. 

“The data potentially stolen, like your name and address can’t be easily changed,” ethical hacker John Opdenakker told Forbes. Opdenakker said cyberhackers can take the information and create legitimate-looking emails to dupe unsuspecting victims.  

Opdenakker said in a worst-case scenario, criminals can use the accessed information to impersonate consumers and gain access to personal accounts.

Customers were advised to change their passwords to protect themselves after the OnePlus data breach, although the company claimed passwords were not stolen.

“If you have an account with OnePlus, make sure that you change your password,” security researcher Sean Wright told Forbes. 

Wright added it would be wise for victims of the OnePlus breach to sign up for credit monitoring. 

According to OnePlus’ FAQ section, the company took immediate steps to stop the hacker and step us security, “making sure there are no similar vulnerablilities.”

“Before making this public, we informed our impacted users by email,” the company said. “Right now, we are working with the relevant authorities to further investigate this incident.”

However, according to The Verge, OnePlus never explained why it allegedly took over a week to announce the data breach.

The company hasn’t reinforced its security enough in the past, because this is the second OnePlus data breach, The Verge reported.

In January 2018, another OnePlus data breach affected about 40,000 customers who had their credit card details stolen.
