Online greeting card seller Funky Pigeon has suspended orders in the wake of a cyber attack, the Guardian reports.
Funky Pigeon, which is owned by WH Smith, reportedly took its systems offline as a precautionary measure and is currently unable to fulfill orders.
Info Security Magazine reports that the Funky Pigeon website currently displays the following message: “Oops! We’re experiencing some issues, and we can’t accept new orders at the moment. Please try again later!”
Funky Pigeon says it is writing to all of its customers from the past year to notify them about the data breach and reassure them that no payment data is at risk. The company does not believe that any passwords have been affected.
“As soon as we discovered the incident…, we launched a forensic investigation led by external experts to understand the incident and whether there had been any impact on customer data,” Funky Pigeon says. “We are currently investigating the extent to which any personal data – specifically names, addresses, email addresses and personalised card and gift designs – has been accessed.”
Funky Pigeon Customer Data May Be Used for Fraud, Cybersecurity Experts Warn
Cybersecurity experts say that Funky Pigeon customers should be on alert for social engineering attacks over the next few months such as phishing.
“Unfortunately, stolen data usually ends up being sold on the dark web and can be used to commit further crimes such as fraud,” said Justin Vaughan-Brown, Vice president of strategic communications at Deep Instinct. “It is an awful position for both the business and customers to be in – not knowing who has access to their personal data and, ultimately, what they could be using it for.”
Funky Pigeon says its teams are “working around the clock” to investigate the issue and promises that it will update customers and other affected parties as necessary.
Regulators and law enforcement authorities have been notified about the Funky Pigeon data breach. The company says it is learning from this experience and will review and update its protocols.
Cyber attacks and data breaches are all to common. The Simplify Group was hit with a cyber attack in November 2021 that affected thousands of transactions and left people who were moving into new homes in limbo. Frustrated customers complained on social media that Simplify failed to properly protect their servers, leaving their customers vulnerable to the cyber attack.
