Shein data breach Zoetop fine overview:

  • Who: The state of New York fined Zoetop, which owns clothing websites Shein and Romwe, $1.9 million over its handling of a 2018 data breach.
  • Why: The data breach led to the theft of 39 million Shein account credentials.
  • Where: Shein was founded in China but recently moved its assets to Singapore.

The state of New York fined Shein owner Zoetop $1.9 million over its handling of a 2018 data breach that led to the theft of 39 million account credentials.

An investigation from New York’s attorney general would discover that Zoetop, which also owns Romwe, had only contacted a “fraction” of the 39 million compromised Shein account holders in regards to the breach, TechCrunch reports. More than 375,000 New York residents of New York were victims of the data breach.

Shein was founded in China before recently moving its assets to Singapore, according to TechCrunch, which reports that the e-commerce clothing exporter grew massively during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Zoetop accused of making misleading statements about Shein data breach

In addition to allegedly failing to disclose the incident to the majority of those affected, the New York attorney general’s office also found that Zoetop made misleading statements about the Shein data breach.

The office of the New York attorney general concluded that Zoetop had, among other things, falsely said that only 6.42 million individuals had been impacted by the data breach and that it was working to inform all those impacted, TechCrunch reports.

“Zoetop had determined that credentials from more than 39 million accounts had been stolen in the attack,” a notice from the New York state attorney general’s office states. “Moreover, contrary to Zoetop’s statement, most accounts affected by the attack were not directly contacted by the company.”

Shein was also in the news late last year after it recalled two children’s sleepwear sets as they did not meet government flammability standards and presented “a risk of burn injury.”
