TalkTalk Data Breach Impacts Thousands of Customers

According to a 2019 BBC report, the company failed to let 4,545 customers know personal information, such as their bank account details, were stolen in a 2015 TalkTalk data breach.

Viewers had contacted BBC Watchdog Live over concerns their data had been breached by TalkTalk. However, they reportedly said, the company had told them their information hadn’t been compromised.

The consumer show did an investigation and reportedly found about 4,500 TalkTalk customers’ details online using a Google search.

But the company reportedly told the BBC the breach was not new.

“The customer data referred to by BBC Watchdog relates to the historical October 2015 data breach. It is not a new incident,” TalkTalk said.

Nearly 157,000 customers’ details were accessed in the TalkTalk data breach, the BBC reported. About 15,000 of those customers had their bank account numbers exposed.

Other details that were compromised include customers’ full names, addresses, birth dates, email addresses, mobile numbers and other information.

According to the BBC, the information had likely been online since the breach without customers’ knowledge.

The Data Breach Aftermath

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) investigation uncovered several failings in the company’s security processes, the BBC reported, and subsequently hit TalkTalk with a fine of £400,000.

When the BBC contacted the firm about its investigation into the TalkTalk data breach, the company explained there had been a “genuine error” and said it had sent a written apology to affected customers.Man upset talking on phone regarding the TalkTalk data breach

“The 2015 incident impacted 4% of TalkTalk customers and at the time, we wrote to all those impacted,” a company statement reportedly said.

The company told the BBC it had advised its customers about their increased risk of receiving scam calls and offered them free credit monitoring.

According to TalkTalk’s statement, 4,545 customers “may have received the wrong notification regarding this incident.”

However, the company said “99.9% of customers received the correct notification in 2015.”

“On their own, none of the details accessed in the 2015 incident could lead to any direct financial loss,” TalkTalk’s statement said.

BBC Watchdog Live spoke to several customers who believe their information was compromised in the TalkTalk data breach.

They reported frequent scam callers, attempted fraud and identity thefts that affected their credit rating.

However, they may not know if their problems can be traced directly to the TalkTalk data breach.

Using the information BBC Watchdog Live was able to uncover during its investigation, someone wishing to commit fraud would be able to sign up for certain services, make purchases, establish direct debits, or even use the information to pose as the victim’s bank to try to access more information.

“If the data has come from TalkTalk then obviously we need to go and revisit all of these people who’ve been told that they weren’t exposed and look at what they can do to rectify the harm,” online security expert Scott Helme told BBC Watchdog Live.

TalkTalk Hacker Sentenced to Jail Time

The hacker involved in the TalkTalk data breach is known and is behind bars.

Daniel Kelley, 22, pleaded guilty to 11 charges, including hacking and blackmailing, and was sentenced to four years of jail time, according to Insurance Journal.

Kelley demanded payments of 465 bitcoin, or about £274,000, from TalkTalk chief executive officer Dido Harding and other TalkTalk employees, Insurance Journal reported. Kelley also hacked about six other organizations and firms.

“Kelley is a prolific and ruthless cyber criminal and blackmailer who caused considerable damage, distress, harm and loss to victims’ worldwide,” Metropolitan Police’s Cyber Crime Unit officer Rob Burrows reportedly said in a statement.
