BMW Automotive Ireland is recalling 16,195 passenger vehicles in the Republic of Ireland after discovering an issue that could cause a car to catch fire, even when the engine is switched off.
The voluntary recall affects certain 3 Series passenger vehicles, and BMW said it would contact those affected via the post, asking them to make an appointment to get the issue fixed.
BMW is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.
The recalled vehicles were produced between July 2004 and July 2011, the notice issued April 26 through the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission said.
BMW said it had identified that as time goes by, the cars may experience frictional corrosion on the connector from the wiring harness to the blower control unit.
The issue can cause damage to the insulation of the wiring harness, which could trigger a short circuit, the company said.
“This could cause a vehicle fire, even when the engine is switched off.”
There was no information available in the recall on whether anyone had been impacted or injured by the fault so far, or on any similar recalls. However, in December 2017, BMW issued a recall of 672,775 3 Series passenger vehicles in the United States for what appears to be a similar or identical issue.
That issue also involved the degrading of the wiring for the “blower-motor” system, the system that controls air flow for the heating and air conditioning, leading to short-circuit and possible fire.
The company said those who believe their vehicle may be impacted by the recall can contact BMW customer care on 1890 719 421 or by email.
The recall comes after BMW was forced to recall several electric models affecting almost 3,000 vehicles in the U.K. last year. That recall involved defects in the battery packs that can increase the risk of fire, Cars UK reported.
