Jaguar Land Rover exhaust filter lawsuit overview:

  • Who: A group action lawsuit has been filed against Jaguar Land Rover.
  • Why: The lawsuit was filed over claims Jaguar Land Rover sold certain vehicles containing defective exhaust filters that allegedly endanger vehicle owners and injure them financially.
  • Where: The lawsuit was brought in the High Court of England and Wales.

Jaguar Land Rover manufactured and sold vehicles containing defective exhaust filters that endangered vehicle owners and injured them financially, a new £3 billion group action lawsuit alleges.

Consumers claim Jaguar Land Rover chose not to disclose the alleged defect — which they argue can cause accelerated engine wear — and is currently unable to remedy the situation for vehicle owners.

Jaguar Land Rover vehicles in the group action include certain models of the company’s Range Rover Evoque, Range Rover Sport, Range Rover, Land Rover Discovery, Land Rover Discovery Sport and Jaguar E-Pace vehicles.

Consumers argue the Jaguar Land Rover vehicles were equipped with defective diesel particulate filter systems that they say causes them to need more frequent servicing than what is promised when the vehicle is first purchased.

The alleged defect, consumers claim, leads to accelerated oil dilution that, in turn, causes wear on the vehicles’ engine components and makes it so the vehicles need to get oil changes more frequently.

Clogged diesel particulate filter systems can cause vehicles to become slower, less responsive, says suit

A diesel particulate filter system that is full or clogged, meanwhile, can cause a vehicle to become slower and less responsive and increase the risk of an accident, the Jaguar Land Rover lawsuit alleges.

Milberg London, the law firm bringing the lawsuit, estimates that more than 500,000 vehicle owners could be eligible to make a claim to be part of the group action, and that hundreds of thousands of pre-owned car owners could also be eligible to join.

The law firm speculates that, if the claim is successful, Jaguar Land Rover vehicle owners could be in line to receive between £3,000 and £16,000 each in compensation, according to a news release.

In September 2020, UK consumer watchdog group Wich? recommended a recall for certain Range Rover Velar, Range Rover Sport, Nissan Qashqai, Nissan Juke, Nissan Pulsar, BMW 5 Series Touring, and Tesla Model S vehicles over concerns they contained defects.
