Volkswagen Emissions Settlement Overview:

  • Who: Volkswagen has agreed to a £193 million settlement.
  • Why: The Volkswagen class action settlement will resolve “dieselgate” allegations that the automaker installed defeat devices designed to cheat emissions tests.
  • Where: The United Kingdom

Volkswagen has agreed to pay £193 million to more than 90,000 UK drivers affected by the company’s emissions cheating scandal, Bloomberg reports.

The Volkswagen class action settlement terms are confidential, and the motor company has not admitted liability for its alleged role in the emissions cheating scandal. However, more than 91,000 claims have reportedly been resolved as part of the emissions settlement.

Volkswagen will also reportedly pay at least some of the claimants’ legal costs and fees.

The Volkswagen class action lawsuit was scheduled to go to trial in January 2023.

“The settlement is another important milestone as the Volkswagen Group continues to move beyond the deeply regrettable events leading up to September 2015,” said Philip Haarmann, Volkswagen’s chief legal officer.

Volkswagen Emissions Cheating Scandal Leads to Lawsuits, Fines

A 2015 investigation in the United States found that Volkswagen used emissions-cheating software in some of its vehicles, which lowered emissions while being tested. The emissions cheating software reportedly reduced readings of noxious gas nitrogen oxide, or NOx, emitted from vehicles.

In response to the emissions cheating scandal, Volkswagen faced a massive European recall that cost the automaker billions of euros and hefty fines from regulators.

The Volkswagen emissions scandal, called “dieselgate” in the United Kingdom, led angry vehicle owners to file Volkswagen class action lawsuits that accused the automaker of cheating on emissions tests.

Volkswagen allegedly sold more than one million vehicles with software designed to cheat emissions tests. Individuals who purchased or leased Volkswagen diesel vehicles in the UK between June 2008 and December 2015 were included in the Volkswagen class action lawsuit.

The automaker vigorously fought against the claims in the emissions cheating class action lawsuits, but its efforts were ultimately unsuccessful.

In August 2020, the Court of Appeal rejected an appeal by Volkswagen and allowed the emissions class action lawsuit to move forward. In April 2020, Lord Justice Stephen Males ruled that the software installed in Volkswagen vehicles was classified as a defeat device designed to cheat emissions testing.
