U.K. university students COVID disruptions lawsuit overview:

  • Who: Nearly 20,000 students who attended university in the U.K. have joined a claim filed against them — including Cardiff University.
  • Why: Students argue the universities’ breached their contract with them by allegedly failing to provide them with the experience they believed they would be receiving with the amount of tuition they paid.
  • Where: Across the U.K.

Thousands of students in the U.K. have filed a multi-million pound claim against universities in the country — including Cardiff University — they argue failed to provide them with the experience their tuition was supposed to offer, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Students who attended university in the U.K. during the COVID-19 pandemic could receive roughly £5,000 each — with international students due to receive even more —  if their claims are successful, reports WalesOnline

The universities are accused of breaching their contracts with their students by allegedly failing to provide them with the experience — namely in-person tuition — the students believed they would receive when they paid tuition to attend.

In addition to allegedly failing to provide in-person tuition and cancelling classes — or simply moving them online — the universities are accused of breaching their contract by denying or restricting physical access to campus amenities, such as study spaces and libraries, reports WalesOnline.

A total of almost 20,000 students — who would have paid £9,250 for undergraduate courses in England and £9,000 for undergrad in Wales —  have reportedly joined the claim so far, with more expected to sign up as well, according to their counsel.

Letters, meanwhile, seeking damages on behalf of current former students who attended universities in the U.K. during the COVID-19 pandemic were already sent to 18 universities, prior to the claim, reports WalesOnline.
