The Office for Product Safety and Standards has announced a recall of Baylis & Harding Goodness Hair Detangler Watermelon Burst due to contamination by bacteria that can cause serious health issues.

The recalled Baylis & Harding hair detangler reportedly “poses a serious risk of microbiological contamination due to the presence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa.” Infection by this type of bacterium may require prolonged hospitalisation.

The recalled product includes 200mL spray bottles of Baylis & Harding Goodness Hair Detangler Watermelon Burst (ASIN B0949LFCKB). The batch numbers for the recalled hair detangler are 1193B, 1194B and 1194C. The barcode number is 017854107465.

Because the Baylis & Harding hair detangler product involves an aerosolised spray, there is an increased risk that the product may be inhaled or come in contact with the eyes.

“This product does not comply with the Cosmetic Products Enforcement Regulations 2013,” according to the Office for Product Safety and Standards notice.

Baylis & Harding Goodness Hair Detangler Watermelon Burst has been withdrawn from the market and recalled from end users.

Baylis & Harding Goodness Hair Detangler Contaminated With Pseudomonas Aeruginosa

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) note that Pseudomonas is commonly found in soil and water. There are many types of Pseudomonas, but the type that most often causes infections in humans is Pseudomonas aeruginosa, the type of bacteria that may be found in the recalled Baylis & Harding hair detangler.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa may affect patients in hospitals. It can cause infections in the blood, lungs or other parts of the body. Those most at risk include patients on ventilators, with burn wounds or catheters or recovering from surgery.

The CDC reports that Pseudomonas aeruginosa is developing antibiotic resistance, potentially making treatment of the infections more difficult because the bacteria are not killed by the antibiotic.

In 2017, antibiotic resistant versions of the bacteria reportedly caused about 32,600 infections in hospitalised patients in the United States and an estimated 2,700 deaths.
