Why Did Whirlpool Issue a Washing Machine Recall?
Whirlpool says that as many as 79 fires occurred in consumers’ homes due to a fault in the washing machines’ door mechanism that can cause the door to overheat.
“Towards the end of 2019, our safety team identified a potential risk concerning certain models of Hotpoint and Indesit washing machines,” Whirlpool’s Vice President Jeff Noel said in a 29 April 2020 statement. “These appliances were designed by Indesit and the manufacturing commenced prior to Whirlpool acquiring the company, but as the new owner, it is our responsibility to put this situation right for our customers.”
Whirlpool recalled the affected washing machines in January 2020, and more than 210,000 consumers registered their appliances as part of the recall in three months.
More than 500,000 Hotpoint and Indesit washing machines have been identified as posing a potential fire risk.
Consumers May Be Eligible for Free Washing Machine Repairs, Replacement
The affected washing machines were manufactured under the Hotpoint and Indesit brands between 2014 and 2018, Whirlpool says. The appliance company urges consumers who own one of the recalled washing machines to unplug them and stop using them.
Consumers who decide to continue using their recalled washing machines should only use cold water cycles of up to 20 degrees Celsius.
If your washing machine is affected by the recall, Whirlpool says it will offer an in-home repair of the appliance or a comparable washing machine free of charge.
