Around 90 individuals and families in the UK are pursuing legal action against AstraZeneca over claims they were seriously injured as a result of taking the pharmaceutical company’s COVID-19 vaccine.
The plaintiffs, who deny being “anti-vaxxers,” say they hope to prove in court that AstraZeneca’s vaccine caused their injuries, MailOnline reports.
Currently, individuals in the UK who suffer an injury from certain vaccines are reportedly entitled to receive a one-time payment of £120,000 as part of a state-funded support system established in the 1970s.
Individuals who receive the funds maintain their eligibility to file legal action because the government does not consider the money as compensation, MailOnline reports.
The plaintiffs reportedly argue the £120,000 is not enough for individuals suffering from the most serious disabilities allegedly caused by the AstraZeneca vaccine.
UK regulators approved AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine in December 2020
UK regulators approved the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine at the end of 2020, according to MailOnline, which reports millions of individuals subsequently received the vaccine in the following months.
The families reportedly argue the AstraZeneca vaccine either killed or severely injured their loved ones, including by allegedly inflicting them with disorders such as thrombotic thrombocytopenia and Guillain-Barre syndrome.
Lawyers representing the plaintiffs estimate that some could be eligible to receive as much as £20 million in compensation, with the total combined damages potentially exceeding £1 billion, MailOnline reports.
The plaintiffs reportedly make their claims under the UK’s Consumer Protection Act.
The AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, which was developed in collaboration with Oxford University, was originally rolled out after being granted emergency use in December 2020, with the UK being the first country in the world to use it.
In January 2021, preliminary results indicated that the AstraZeneca vaccine was between 62% to 90% effective, compared to 95% for the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine, according to a BBC report.
