- What: The government is accused of violating travellers rights by making them stay in quarantine hotels, even if they are fully vaccinated for COVID-19.
- Where: Legal action is pending against the UK government.
The United Kingdom is violating travellers’ rights by making them spend 11 nights in a quarantine hotel when traveling from “red list” countries, even if they are fully vaccinated and test negative for COVID-19, a proposed lawsuit claims.
More than 60 countries are on the red list, including Mexico, Turkey, and many countries in Africa and Latin America, BBC News reported. The price of staying in a quarantine hotel is £2,285.
Law firm PGMBM told the BBC it had called for a judicial review into the government’s policy, but the request had been denied.
Class Action Seeks End to UK Quarantine Hotel Policy for Vaccinated Travellers, Refunds
The law firm says it is seeking to represent any traveler who was forced to stay in hotel quarantine despite being fully vaccinated. It’s seeking to change the government’s quarantine policy, and have travellers refunded who had to stay in quarantine hotels despite their vaccination status.
The firm estimated more than 100,000 people have been forced to quarantine in hotels since February.
Other European countries with mandatory quarantine involving hotels have already changed their policies so fully vaccinated travellers are exempt from quarantine, the BBC reported.
PGMBM is representing plaintiff Ozgur Akyuz, a bus driver from Hackney who said his pregnant wife and three-year-old daughter caught COVID-19 while staying in hotel quarantine.
“They were put in a hotel near Heathrow and it was filthy. She was crying all day long,” he said.
This class action comes after criticism of the conditions of the quarantine hotels.
In April, families staying in UK quarantine hotels said they were taking legal action after being subjected to unsanitary conditions in high-fee quarantine hotels that failed to meet their dietary requirements.
Travellers have also complained about “cowboy companies” overcharging for required COVID tests, leading to a government clamp down on such services this August.
