Food Safety Network food poisoning prevention overview:
- Who: The Food Standards Agency and Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council have teamed up to create a new Food Safety Network.
- Why: The Food Safety Network will bring together experts to address the issue of food poisoning in the UK.
- Where: The Food Safety Network is located in the UK.
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) and Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) are teaming up to address the issue of food poisoning, a major health issue that reportedly costs the UK as much as £9 billion every year, according to the FSA.
Together, the FSA and BBSRC invested £1.6 million to create a new Food Safety Network hosted by the Quadram Institute.
Quadram Institute scientists use advanced genomic sequencing approaches and genomic epidemiology, which has helped the UK monitor and respond to microbes in the food supply that can cause food poisoning.
“Importantly, the network will ensure that the FSA is well-placed to tackle the challenges of foodborne illnesses by bringing together experts from government, industry and academia to address current and emerging issues of food safety in the UK,” says Robin May, the FSA Chief Scientific Advisor Professor.
The Food Safety Network will bring together food producers, policy makers and researchers in the United Kingdom to identify areas of research need and coordinate research activities, applying science to tackle the identified food safety challenges.
Food poisoning affects millions in the UK each year
There are an estimated 2.4 million cases of foodborne illness in the United Kingdom each year. Many foodborne illnesses are caused by a microbial pathogen that enters the food supply from livestock, the environment or from other people.
Salmonella and campylobacter are the microbes that pose the most significant economic impact in the United Kingdom.
And although listeria food poisoning is rare, it can be fatal in nearly 13% of cases. Recently, Waitrose recalled some of its rainbow trout fish fillets because they may have been contaminated with the bacterium listeria monocytogenes.
