Waitrose recalled a rainbow trout product as it may contain listeria monocytogenes.
Waitrose posted the recall information June 8 on the supermarket chain’s website.
It applies to Waitrose 2 British Hot Smoked Rainbow Trout Fillets in 125g packs with a use-by date of June 11. The brand of the fish fillets is Waitrose.
“Waitrose is recalling the above product as a precautionary measure due to the potential presence of listeria monocytogenes, which may lead to illness if consumed,” the recall notice says.
Listeriosis is a serious infection usually caused by eating food contaminated with the bacterium listeria monocytogenes, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
An estimated 1,600 people get listeriosis each year, and about 260 die, the CDC says. The infection is most likely to sicken pregnant women and their newborns, adults aged 65 or older and people with weakened immune systems.
Waitrose does not say how it discovered the contamination or whether anyone has been sickened so far.
The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.
Waitrose recall says customers can return rainbow trout for full refund
Waitrose advises any customers who have bought the product not to consume it and to package it up and return it to their local Waitrose & Partners branch for a refund.
Waitrose recalled a range of products in the last few months, including basil pesto, pork crackling and pork scratchings, due to fears of salmonella contamination.
