GoodHome Heating Fans Recalled Over Fire Risk

A potentially hazardous fan heater is being recalled in the U.K.

GoodHome Colenso 2000W White Freestanding Fan Heaters can overheat to the point of melting the case, according to an an alert published on the B&Q website, DIY.com.

This overheating presents an electric and fire hazard when consumers use it, according to the advisory.

A second home improvement retailer, Screwfix, issued a similar recall alert

“A very small number of products have shown excessive heat build-up, leading to scorching or deformation of the heater,” Screwfix said in the alert.

Screwfix says the recall is a precautionary measure, but consumers are being told by both stores to stop using the device if they have it and to return it immediately.

Screwfix customers who may have one of these GoodHome fan heaters can call its customer service at 03330 112 112 for refunds or email online@screwfix.com with the subject line of “SKU 441JK.”

For B&Q customers, the customer service phone number is 0300 303 4482.

The recall pertains to GoodHome fan heaters with the barcode of 5059340046921. They were sold at B&Q stores from September 2020 to January 2021. The product code is 441JK. The model number is FH-115.

The makers of GoodHome fan heaters are not facing any legal action over this recall, but Top Class Actions is tracking this alert for developments.

Fan heaters, even if they’re working properly, can still be dangerous.

The London Fire Brigade reports half of all house fires in the U.K. are caused by electrical heaters. A report published in 2013 showed a third of all deadly electrical fires involved heaters.

The fires aren’t always caused by a faulty fan heaters. Sometimes houses burn due when the heaters are left unattended. Other times, flammable objects are left too close to the heater itself.

U.K. consumer advocate Which? advises to keep the following in mind if using a fan heater in your home:

  • Don’t plug into an extension lead
  • Keep kids out of reach
  • Don’t position near pets
  • Inspect regularly
  • Don’t sit too close
  • Don’t leave it in the way
  • Don’t leave it on overnight
  • Don’t dry clothes on it
  • Don’t use more than one in a room at once

I bought a different model FH-715 from B+Q not listed in any recall that I can find last July, have been suffering with sore throats on and off and what with covid it’s been a bit of a mindf*! So today to my horror I actually saw the plastic grill dripping molten plastic! Naturally it has been unplugged but I figure I’ve been breathing in toxic fumes from this thing for the last six months!

I have four of these heater and Screwfix refunded over the phone during the week and advised to recycle the heaters,I found that the case does get very hot if the thermostat is turned up fully and the heater wont turn itself off also if the air was at the back was to close to the wall it sparked clicking inside. Some comments on Screwfix mentioned a melted case the safty switch melted on the bottom and in some cases the fuses tripping.

What I did notice if run as above the wall plug became hot and one pin became hot to the touch. If the thermostat was used about quarter of the way it turned itself on and off without the hot plug problem and airflow was ok but the case was hot.

The B&Q site mentioned electric shock/fire but Screwfix just mentioned the case melting. The heater gave out great heat for its size and warmed a room quickly.Screwfix doesn’t have a replacment.
