Children in face masks trick or treat on Halloween - halloween safety tips

With 31 October quickly approaching, there are some extra Halloween safety tips to follow in 2020. This year has been brought unprecedented changes in all we do, and Halloween will be no exception.

Here’s how to celebrate Halloween safely.

Is Halloween Cancelled in the U.K. This Year?

Many fun activities have to be put on hold in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, but Halloween festivities could be cancelled depending on where you live, the BBC reported.

The Scottish government has warned against trick-or-treating. Deputy First Minister John Swinney advised parents that door-to-door trick-or-treating can be risky and should be avoided, according to the BBC.

Halloween lands during Wales’ 17-day lockdown, so meeting with other households is off the table.

“We are asking people to stay home during the firebreak period to slow the spread of coronavirus and help save lives,” a Wales government spokesperson said, according to BBC.

Halloween safety tips this year include avoiding parties, as social distancing and quarantining rules are still in place.

While the guidelines of the pandemic are limiting, that doesn’t mean Halloween is cancelled in your own household.

Feel free to dress up little ones, do arts and crafts, have candy and still make some memories.

The Brighton & Hove City Council came up with some spooky and fun Halloween safety tips this year.

Pumpkin carving, Halloween movies or cooking a Halloween meal are all fun activities to do to celebrate without the risk.

While following proper 2020 Halloween safety tips, celebrating is still possible.

How Can I Make Trick-or-Treating Safer for Kids Visiting My Home?

Although most families will not be trick-or-treating, in some neighbourhoods parents might decide to safely hand out candy. Be sure to stick to your city’s coronavirus safety guidelines.

A girl in a black-and-orange Halloween costume wears a mask - halloween safety tipsU.S. pediatrician Dr. Jean Moorjani explained some trick-or-treating Halloween safety tips, according to Pop Sugar.

“Obviously trick-or-treating can’t be done in these little social bubbles we’ve been hearing so much about,” she told Pop Sugar.

“If a family is participating and handing out candy, they should designate one person to do so,” Moorjani added. “Don’t get the kids involved in the process this year, for example. It’s also probably safer if one person is passing out candy instead of a bunch of kids reaching into a candy bowl.”

Social distancing trick-or-treating might be possible — by leaving a bowl of candy outside or sitting outside while leaving a bowl of candy farther away in the driveway, for example. Leave out some hand sanitiser if you’d like.

According to Pop Sugar, Moorjani also suggested a fun alternative to trick-or-treating when discussing Halloween safety tips.

She said some families plan to be outside while other neighbours drive by and toss candy to the children. Children can show off their costumes and do some “reverse” trick-or-treating. We think this sounds like fun!

What Halloween Safety Tips Should I Follow If We Go Out Trick-or-Treating?

If you plan to participate in some Halloween trick-or-treating festivities, be sure everyone is following the city safety guidelines.

Parents and children should wear masks while out and about. Moorjani told Pop Sugar gloves are not necessary because they work best when changed often.

Carry hand sanitiser with you and use it often if trick or treating.

If adults are giving out candy and treats, obviously they should be individually wrapped for safety.

There is little evidence to support that COVID-19 transmits through objects, Moorjani said. If parents are really worried, they can sanitise the candy before giving it to kids.
