Law firms in the United Kingdom are seeking claimants in a potential group action following a LOQBOX data breach in 2020.
Any current or former LOQBOX customer may be eligible to make a claim for compensation, according to Keller Lenkner, one of the law firms representing alleged data breach victims.
LOQBOX — a service that helps consumers build their credit scores, according to its website — discovered the data breach on 20 February 2020, MoneySavingExpert reported
Loqbox says the personal information accessed by the hackers includes some customers’ names, dates of birth, postal addresses and phone numbers.
In some instances, the hackers also accessed financial information such as the first six and last four digits of a customer’s 16-digit card number, payment card expiry dates, sort codes customers use to unlock their LOQBOX, and two digits of customers’ bank account numbers, MoneySavingExpert reported.
While most of those individual pieces of information aren’t enough for hackers to use to commit fraud, it could be used to make phishing attacks convincing, according to InfoSecurity magazine.
For example, if a hacker uses the information gained from a data breach to email consumers, and that a consumer responds to that email and provides additional details, hackers could then commit identity fraud scams, InfoSecurity reported.
Following the breach, MoneySavingExpert reported, LOQBOX said it had notified police and regulatory authorities of the incident and had taken “further steps” to improve its computer system defences.
According to Keller Lenkner, the best evidence that can demonstrate you have been affected by the LOQBOX data breach includes:
- Evidence showing you received an email from LOQBOX alerting you that your details were affected
- Evidence of any financial loss, distress, or inconvenience you suffered as a result of the breach, such as: bank statements; correspondence with banks or credit card providers; credit score reports; medical appointment details or prescriptions for stress or distress related to the breach
- Evidence of fraudulent transactions or fraud attempts, alerts, cancelled cards relating to the details that were compromised
- Evidence of an increase in spam
- Confirmation your information was not put at risk by a different data breach, to the extent you are aware
- And anything else that could be relevant
