A U.K. Volvo recall has been issued due to a potentially dangerous windscreen wiper defect.
The windscreen wiper defect, which affects 31,778 vehicles in the U.K., is described as a problem with the front windscreen wiper arm on the XC60 model, according to Express.
The Volvo recall includes the 2018-2020 XC60 mid-size SUV for clumsily tightened nuts on the windscreen wipers. Volvo announced there was not enough torque used when screwing in the nuts on the windscreen wiper arms at the manufacturer, causing “poor fixation,” according to the Car Connection.
The windscreen wiper defect could allow the wiper arm to loosen.
If the wiper arm does not function in a rainstorm, it could make it difficult for the driver to see and potentially result in an accident. The windscreen wiper defect can be distinguished by an odd noise occurring when the loose wiper arm strikes the bonnet.
Globally, the Volvo recall has affected all 87,226 XC60 models made between 20 May 2017 and 25 May 2020.
A spokesperson for the carmaker issued a statement regarding the Volvo recall to Express, saying: “Investigations by Volvo Cars have identified an issue with a front windscreen wiper arm on XC60 models on the SPA platform produced between 2017 and 2020. The nut securing the wiper arm may not have been tightened sufficiently during the manufacturing process, potentially causing the arm to come loose from its assembly. Possible symptoms of the issue are an unusual noise due to the wiper arm being in contact with the bonnet or reduced or no wiping function.”
According to Volvo, there have not been any reports of injuries or accidents regarding the windscreen wiper defect.
The windscreen wiper defect fix is easy, according to Consumer Reports.
Volvo owners can take their vehicle to a dealer and get the issue checked. The dealer will affix the nut correctly, using the appropriate torque specification. Volvo dealers will fix the windscreen wiper defect at no cost.

According to Yahoo! News, all XC60 owners will be notified by the end of October.
More information about the Volvo recall or any other vehicle recalls can be found on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website.
Using a vehicle’s 17-digit VIN number, NHTSA’s website will let consumers know immediately if there is an open recall on their Volvo.
If consumers do not receive any information about a recall, then there is not one. Carmakers announce recalls regularly, so checking older models is a good idea, too. Consumers can check multiple times a year to be sure a recall has not been issued.
Volvo has had to issue a number of recalls over the past several months.
The Car Connection reported that in March, the Volvo’s 2020 model XC60 was recalled over an issue that caused the automatic emergency braking system to not properly engage.
Then, Volvo’s 2018 models were also recalled over front seat belts that could come loose in a crash, possible separation of liftgate arms and an absent GPS locator.
And Express.co.uk reported Volvo recalled 25,000 vehicles in Australia over seat belt safety issues in several models. The previous Volvo recall cited the seat belt may not adequately restrain drivers during an accident.
Another Volvo recall involving a similar problem affected over 160,000 vehicles in the U.K.
