Amazon Ring Privacy Lawsuit Overview:

  • Who: Amazon was sued by a doctor living next door to a home fitted with four of its Ring smart doorbells.
  • What: The plaintiff was awarded £100K by a judge who agreed her privacy was breached.
  • Where: Oxford, United Kingdom

Amazon will pay an Oxford doctor £100,000 after she claimed her privacy was breached by a safety-conscious neighbor who fitted four Amazon Ring smart doorbells outside his home.

A judge has ruled that neighbor Jon Woodard’s use of his cameras broke data laws and amounted to harassment of Dr Mary Fairhurst, who alleged the cameras rendered her under “’continuous visual surveillance.”

It is thought to be the first ruling of its kind in the United Kingdom, setting a precedent for the Ring doorbell, Proactive Investors reports

The decision could lead to Amazon facing a wave of legal claims. The case is not a class action, but it could pave the way for thousands of similar privacy lawsuits.

Ring works by alerting a homeowner when a visitor arrives at the door, picking up on sound and movement. However Woodard, trying to deter car thieves, fitted four of the devices, putting his neighbor under the cameras, too.

The judge reportedly said the audio range of the Ring doorbell was excessive for crime prevention.

Amazon is already facing multiple class action lawsuits over Ring doorbells in the United States. Last year, one plaintiff alleged that Amazon’s Ring video doorbells violate privacy laws by collecting biometric data without consent and sharing it with law enforcement agencies.

The tech has also reportedly caused privacy issues, as there have been several widely reported instances of Ring “hacking.” A stranger was reportedly able to communicate with a young Florida girl while she was in her bedroom. A similar incident prompted an Alabama father to file a lawsuit. And a Florida couple said that they were subjected to racist attacks as they got ready for bed.
