Russian hackers are reportedly launching cyber attacks against the UK and other countries that have stood up against President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.
Hackers from the Russia-linked group Killnet reportedly target Estonia, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Ukraine, and the United States.
Since Russia launched its attack on Ukraine nearly three months ago, several countries raised their alert levels and warned of a potential cyber attack on infrastructure and IT systems. Russia reportedly denies any role in the cyberattacks.
International cybersecurity authorities have named Killnet one of the largest threats to infrastructure. UK organisations were urged to heighten their cybersecurity against a potential attack from Russia.
The Eurovision contest was held in Italy, which the Ukrainian Kalush Orchestra won recently. Authorities said they stopped a cyberattack during Eurovision’s final voting stages.
UK Businesses Experience Growing Cybersecurity Threat
According to a State of Security Report unveiled by security services company Infoblox, Business Leader reports that most UK businesses face as many as five cybersecurity incidents per year.
The State of Security Report surveyed a sample of 100 UK respondents who work in IT and cybersecurity. The recent move toward remote and hybrid work has significantly impacted the corporate landscape. Since 2020, more than 60% of UK organizations have reportedly sped up their digital transformation projects to support remote work.
However, the increase in remote and hybrid work has increased the potential digital risk UK businesses face. Sixty-one percent of organisations surveyed reported having experienced up to five cybersecurity incidents in the last 12 months.
According to the report, in 73% of those cases, organisations detected and responded to the cyber attack within 24 hours.
Phishing scams and unsecured Wi-Fi access were the leading causes of a data breach. More than 80% of cybersecurity incidents were reportedly related to phishing scams, suggesting that organisations need to train employees more effectively to recognize the signs of scam emails.
Hackers are reportedly attempting to capitalize on cybersecurity vulnerabilities within the organisations. In response, organisations are stepping up to improve their systems and defend against a potential cyber attack.
“The pandemic shutdowns over the past two years have reshaped how companies around the world operate,” Anthony James, VP of Product Marketing at Infoblox, said. “Cloud-first networks and corresponding security controls went from nice-to-have features to business mainstays as organisations sent office workers to work from home.”
Last month, online greeting card seller Funky Pigeon suspended orders following a cyber attack. The company says that no customer payment information was compromised in the data breach.
