Blood pressure medications were recalled after an explosive chemical was found, say government officials who warn that the substance has also been linked to cancer.

The recall covers several types of irbesartan and losartan, including 31 batches supplied by Bristol Laboratories Limited, Brown & Burk UK Limited, and Teva UK Limited. Regulators say dozens of batches of the blood pressure pills were found to contain azido-tetrazole, a highly explosive chemical.

Regulators also revealed that batches of blood pressure pills contaminated with the explosive cancer-causing chemical have been available to the public for almost two years.

“It’s important that healthcare professionals check their stock to quarantine and return these batches,” Dr June Raine, chief executive of the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency said of the recalled blood pressure medications according to the recall notice. “If you’ve been taking one of the affected products, speak with your doctor or pharmacist before stopping any treatment – they can address any concerns and can advise you on the best course of action.”

Indeed, stopping blood pressure medication suddenly without consulting a healthcare practitioner can be risky, warn regulators.

More than 160,000 Britons are prescribed blood pressure medication each year. None of the recalled blood pressure pills have exploded, according to regulators.

The blood pressure medication recall comes on the heels of massive worldwide recalls of more than 20 products that were contaminated with N nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA), another known carcinogen.

Similarly, the recalled blood pressure pills may have been contaminated in the factories where they were made, reports the DailyMail.

Top Class Actions will continue to monitor this and other recalls in the interest of consumer safety.
