Coca-Cola recall overview:

  • Who: Coca-Cola issued a European recall for batches of its Coca-Cola, Fanta, Sprite, Minute Maid and Fuze Tea beverages.
  • Why: The Coca-Cola recall was initiated over concerns the beverages contain elevated chlorate levels.
  • Where: The recalled beverages were distributed in the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg, along with a limited amount in France, Germany and Great Britain.

Coca-Cola reportedly issued a recall in Europe for multiple beverages over concerns they contain elevated levels of chlorate.

The recall includes batches of Coca-Cola, Fanta, Sprite, Minute Maid and Fuze Tea beverages with the production codes 328 GE to 338 GE that were primarily distributed in the Netherlands Belgium and Luxembourg, reports APNews.

Coca-Cola said it is also in contact with authorities in France, Germany and Great Britain, where the company said a “very limited quantity” of the recalled drinks were shipped, reports APNews.

The company reportedly said it decided to initiate the recall after it found elevated levels of chlorate in bottles and cans at a Belgium production plant.

Consumers are advised not to drink the recalled Coca-Cola beverages and to return them to their original place of purchase to obtain a full refund, reports APNews.

European Union asks other countries to check whether recalled Coca-Cola drinks are stocked

Health authorities in Denmark, Portugal and Romania, meanwhile, have reportedly been notified by the European Union to investigate whether shops or vending machines in their countries may have been stocked with the recalled Coca-Cola beverages.

Chlorate is a chemical found in chlorine disinfectants that are used to treat water used for food processing and has been linked to potentially serious health problems — particularly in children, reports the Associated Press.

Experts, however, reportedly say a consumer would have to drink a large amount of chlorate to suffer from vomiting or other serious health issues.

Reckitt/Mead Johnson Nutrition expanded a recall of Enfamil Nutramigen LGG Stage 1 and Hypoallergenic formula powders into the U.K. and Ireland in January. The recall was initiated over concerns the formula had been exposed to Cronobacter sakazakii.
