On June 27, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) and Food Standards Scotland (FSS) released their first food standards report on the changes in the food system status following Brexit.
The food standards report was launched after a period of significant upheaval in the past few years, from events like Brexit, the COVID-19 pandemic, and disruption related to the war in Ukraine. The FSA and FSS initiated this report over concerns that these disruptions could have a significant impact on the food system in the U.K.
Inaugural food safety report finds U.K. food standards have been maintained despite challenges
The initial report concludes that the U.K. food standards have remained relatively stable despite these major pressures. However, there is reason to be concerned about future challenges due to a decrease in the number of food business inspections and the delay in setting up controls for high-risk food and feed imported from the European Union.
“It is encouraging for U.K. consumers and our international trading partners that this report provides reassurance that the high food standards we enjoy in the U.K. have been upheld during a really tough period for the food system,” said FSA Chair Professor Susan Jebb.
“However, the effects of recent momentous events are still being felt, and will continue to have an impact on our food systems for many years to come.”
The inaugural food standards report, titled “Our Food 2021: An annual review of food standards across the UK,” is available here.
The FSA explains that the food standards report will focus on food and feed safety and other standards to reassure consumers about the quality of their food. In the case of feed, the FSA will consider whether it is safe to introduce into the food chain.
The report will examine evidence from government data and other sources to determine whether the U.K.’s food is “fundamentally safe, nutritious, authentic, and what it claims to be, all with a view to protecting the consumer’s best interests.”
In its effort to ensure food safety in the U.K., the FSA is also teaming up with the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council to create a Food Safety Network that will tackle the issue of foodborne illness.
