Waitrose Pesto and Pork Recall Overview:

  • Who: Waitrose is recalling a range of products including basil pesto, pork crackling and pork scratchings.
  • Why: The company says the products could contain salmonella.
  • Where: The recall is effective in the United Kingdom.

Waitrose is recalling a range of products, including basil pesto, pork crackling and pork scratchings, due to fears of salmonella contamination.

The recalled products include a range of Snaffling Pig pork crackling and scratchings, Awfully Posh Pork crackling and scratchings and Waitrose Green Pesto with Basil.

Pork Products Pulled By Producer

Both the Snaffling Pig and Awfully Posh Pork products are being recalled by their manufacturer, Fresher Foods Ltd, which said in a recall notice that salmonella had been found in some of the products. The company’s recall also includes Openshaws pork crackling products, which are not sold at Waitrose.

The nine Snaffling Pig products being recalled from Waitrose include Snaffling Pig Pigs in Blanket (glass jar); Snaffling Pig BBQ (glass jar); Snaffling Pig Salt and Black Pepper (glass jar); and a Snaffling Pig advent calendar. All have best-before dates up to Sept. 23, 2022. For a full list of products, click here.

The Awfully Posh Pork products being recalled by Waitrose are Awfully Posh Pork Crackling 40g, all date codes up to and including best-before 23 July 2022, and Awfully Posh Pork Scratchings 40g, all date codes up to and including best-before 25 June 2022.

In a consumer notice, Fresher Foods says all its products undergo rigorous quality and food safety inspections as part of its manufacturing process.

“We apologise to our customers for any inconvenience that this has caused,” it said. “Thank you for your understanding.”

Waitrose is urging consumers not to eat any of the recalled products and to return them to a local Waitrose & Partners store for a full refund.

Basil Pesto Could be Contaminated

Meanwhile, Waitrose is recalling its Waitrose & Partners Green Pesto with Basil after salmonella was found in the product. In a recall notice posted by the Food Safety Agency, the company says the pesto comes in a 145g container with a use-by date of Feb. 27, 2022.

The company is urging consumers not to eat the pesto, and to package and return it for a full refund.

“We apologise that it has been necessary to recall this product and for the inconvenience caused,” Waitrose says in a customer notice.

The recalls come as Tesco is also pulling products from its shelves due to possible salmonella contamination. This week, the supermarket giant recalled Tesco Hog Roast Style Pork with Apple Sauce after salmonella was detected in the crackling.

In a recall notice, Tesco says the crackling crumb sachet within the pack may contain the highly infectious bacteria, and it is urging customers not to eat any of the hog roasts, telling them to instead return them to Tesco stores for a full refund. No receipt is required.
