Three logistics companies have admitted they committed fraud by under-declaring the value of post sent by businesses, depriving Royal Mail of approximately £70 million from 2008 to 2017.

On 22 August, Worldwide Transport Express Ltd., Tiger International Logistics Ltd., and Global Express Worldwide Ltd. were convicted of conspiracy to commit fraud after a Southwark Crown Court judge directed the jury to enter guilty verdicts.

The companies had been on trial for about one week before they changed their pleas.

“Members of the jury, although this has happened very quickly, what it means is that this trial has come to an end,” said Judge Bartle. “In one sense, you may find it frustrating because you heard the opening, but you heard no evidence in this case.”

“It’s the duty of all counsel to strive to achieve an outcome which is in the interest of justice — I am sure what has happened this morning is in the interest of justice,” the judge continued.

Judge Philip Bartle KC informed the jury that the prosecution would not offer evidence in the cases of three individuals who were on trial with the logistics companies.

One of the individuals, Parmjeet Sandhu, pled guilty to the lesser charge of obtaining services dishonestly under the Fraud Act 2006. He was released on bail as he awaits sentencing.

The other two individuals, Balginder Sandhu and Lawkhwinder Sekhon, were cleared of charges of conspiracy to commit fraud.

Royal Mail fraudsters reportedly under-valued shipment value and pocketed the difference

The alleged Royal Mail fraud scheme relied on abusing the self-declaration of value for large postage-service firms. By understating the value of the shipments, the fraudsters would keep the difference.

Parmjeet Sandhu’s brother Narinder Sandhu was allegedly the architect of the fraud. He was allegedly able to purchase a multimillion-pound mansion and expensive cars from the money stolen through the Royal Mail fraud.

Parmjeet Sandhu reportedly received a salary of £495,000 and owned £2.6 million in property that he was able to purchase due to the fraud.

Last fall, Royal Mail temporarily suspended access to its Click and Drop website after a data breach exposed customers’ order information.

The Royal Mail fraud lawsuit is R. v. Parmjeet Sandu, et al., Case No. T20207277, at Southwark Crown Court.
