Celtic Football Club Abuse Class Action Lawsuit Overview:

  • Who: Victims of sexual abuse at the closed-down Celtic Boys Club are planning to file a class action lawsuit against the Celtic Football Club.
  • Why: Abuse victims claim Celtic Football Club should be held responsible for compensating them.
  • Where: The planned class action lawsuit is in Scotland.

Celtic Football Club is responsible for the sexual abuse suffered by victims at the since-closed Celtic Boys Club, a planned class action lawsuit alleges.

Victims of abuse at the shuttered Celtic Boys Club claim the Celtic Football Club should be required to provide compensation, arguing the two entities were inherently linked.

The Celtic Football Club, meanwhile, has previously hit back against allegations it did nothing in response to the scandal, while continuing to express sympathy for victims, reports BBC News Scotland.

“The club again expresses its sincere sympathy, regret and sorrow to those affected and reiterates that it will stand by its responsibilities, respecting the due process of the law,” a Celtic Football Club spokesman told BBC News Scotland.

A number of individuals who worked at the Celtic Boys Club have been given criminal convictions for their roles in the abuse, reports BBC News Scotland.

Celtic Football Club Denies Responsibility For Alleged Abuse

The Celtic Football Club has always claimed that it operated separately from the Celtic Boys Club and was not responsible for the actions of those who worked there, reports The Irish Times

The planned class action lawsuit includes 25 men who played football at the Celtic Boys Club, primarily during its heyday in the 1980s, according to The Irish Times, which reports class action lawsuits were not possible in Scotland before a law was passed this past year.

Patrick Maguire, a partner at the firm representing the victims, told The Irish Times that the class action lawsuit would be a landmark case and hopefully set an example that the abuse victims faced at the Celtic Boys Club will not be tolerated.

“This is completely unique,” Maguire told The Irish Times. “I know of no other group actions, or involving such a large number of claimants, against any other club in Europe. I hope this is a wake-up call for Celtic and they decide to face up to their responsibilities instead of rubbing salt in the wounds of survivors.”

In March, the Football Association (FA) released a report that determined it failed to protect children from sexual abuse which occured in the sport between 1995 and 2000.

The FA claimed it was not responsible for abuse that occured in the sport between 1970 and 1995, however.
