Electric car maker Polestar has recalled the Polestar 2 after several drivers have claimed the car has lost power due to defective inverters, Driving Electric reported.

According to Driving Electric, 4,586 Polestar 2 vehicles have been recalled in Europe, and 360 Polestar 2 vehicles have been recalled in the U.K. A total of 3,150 Polestar 2 cars had already been delivered to U.K. and EU drivers before the recall was issued.

U.S. deliveries of Polestar 2s have not rolled out yet, Autocar reported.

Polestar says the recall “involves the replacement of faulty inverters on most delivered customer vehicles,” according to Driving Electric. Polestar explained in a statement that the inverters “transform the stored energy in the battery into the power required by the electric motors.”

The inverter transforms the Polestar 2’s battery energy into power to be used by the vehicles’ motor, Autocar reported.

The faulty inverter’s problem is unclear, but the Polestar 2 has been fixed, according to Autocar. Sales to drivers will continue, and all undelivered Polestar 2s will be updated to fix the defective inverters before being sent to customers. Polestar 2 deliveries may be delayed while the inverter recalls are being worked on.

The automaker said drivers affected by the Polestar 2 recall will be sent an email by 2 November.

The customer notice reportedly said the inverter can be fixed in one quick visit to a mechanic, according to Autocar.

Polestar’s statement said the recall is being resolved as quickly as possible.

“We recognise the importance of updating our customers,” the online statement says. “In order to successfully address the issues, we have needed to ensure that appropriate investigations are made before customers are informed. We appreciate our customers’ patience as we follow the necessary process.”

Parallel to the Polestar 2 recall is a service campaign to replace the car’s high-voltage coolant heater (HVCH), according to Driving Electric. The HVCH is responsible for heating the car’s cabin and battery, but the part has been found defective in the early manufacturing of some cars.

Polestar confirmed 138 Polestar 2 vehicles need the HVCH replaced as part of the service campaign, Driving Electric reported.

“As part of the actions required by the recall and service campaign, all vehicles will also be upgraded to be compatible with forthcoming Over-The-Air (OTA) updates,” Polestar said, according to Tech Crunch. “This will allow Polestar to push new software directly to Polestar 2 vehicles when OTA updates are available.”

Polestar is a fairly new electric car brand, branching out from Volvo Car Group, Tech Crunch reported.

In 2017, Polestar was reconstructed as an electric performance vehicle brand with a mission to manufacture lively, fun-to-drive cars. Electric Polestar 2 vehicles began production in China that same year.

Making an all-electric vehicle was a milestone for Volvo Car Group, according to Tech Crunch.

But Polestar faced some backlash in its early days.

On 2 October, a recall was announced after reports of a few cars stopping all of a sudden while drivers were operating them.

Apparently, the abrupt stopping of Polestars is not common, and CEO Thomas Ingenlath said during a Tech Crunch interview that it happened only in “very, very rare cases.”

No accidents or injuries were reported in relation to those incidents, according to Tech Crunch. The recall was fixed with a software update.
