Glass in Pesto Siciliano Products Prompts Urgent Recall

La Bio Idea is urgently recalling its pesto product over concerns about glass shards in the containers.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland said in a notice issued Tuesday that the recall was issued for La Bio Idea’s Organic Pesto – Siciliano after pieces of glass was discovered in the product.

The product, which is made in Italy, comes in 130-gram jars. The recalled batch has a best before date of 1 October, 2023.

Shoppers will be informed of the recalled pesto by displays in stores.

Pesto is a popular pasta sauce. La Bio Idea’s recalled pesto is made from basil, almonds, and garlic. The Irish Daily Mirror reports that it is popular with vegans due to its ingredients. The pesto recall is a category two alert, according to the Food Safety Authority of Ireland.

“Category 2 alerts are issued for information relating to food safety, but not detailing or requiring any specific action to be taken,” says the agency’s website.

Another recently recalled item includes Plain Koko Smooth and Mellow. According to the Food Safety Authority of Ireland, the non-dairy product was sold past its use-by date. Consumers should not eat the recalled KoKo, warns the agency’s notice

The Plain Koko recall also falls under category two, according to the agency.

“Food alerts are notifications issued by the [Food Safety Authority of Ireland] to official agencies and food businesses or other businesses relating to an identified hazard i.e. a biological, chemical or physical agent in, or condition of, food/food contact materials with the potential to cause an adverse health effect,” says the agency’s website
