What is This Claim About?
A class action lawsuit claims Mastercard overcharged more than 46 million people in Britain via merchant swipe fees between 1992 and 2008.
Who’s Eligible?
Anyone who, between 22 May 1992 and 21 June 2008, purchased goods or services from U.K. businesses that accepted Mastercard at a time at which they were both a U.K. resident for a continuous period of at least three months and were aged 16 or older may qualify as Class Members.
The Collective Proceedings Order Application states it does not matter what form of payment you used to make purchases at U.K. firms selling goods or services – meaning you do not need to have paid with a Mastercard in order to be a Class Member, according to a website established for the claim.
How Much Compensation Will I Receive?
If the case is successful, eligible Class Members could each receive a payment of £300.
The final amount each Class Member will receive will be established in court.
How Do I Join?
No action is needed at this point unless you would like to object to the claim.

Earlier this month, the U.K. Supreme Court allowed the Mastercard class action lawsuit to move forward.
The European Commission decided in December 2007 that Mastercard imposed unlawful transaction fees on businesses accepting Mastercard as payment, according to the claim website.
In addition, the commission said consumers are likely to have paid more for goods and services because the businesses raised their prices as a result of the Mastercard fees.
Mastercard appealed the commission’s decision, but lost in 2014, the claim website says.
A hearing in the case is scheduled for 25 and 26 March 2021.
At this hearing, the Court will consider what can be included in the case and whether it can proceed, according to MoneySavingExpert. A decision is expected by the end of May.
