  • Where: The recall is for Lidl customers in the UK.

UK food retailer Lidl has recalled a batch of its oat milk following a months-long campaign by a 23-year-old Scottish TikToker who said the batch of milk with the sell-by date of 2022 was lumpy and had an odd smell.

Luna, who goes by the username @lunahtic, said she was a regular purchaser of Lidl Just Free oat milk, but in August noticed numerous cartons of the milk were “lumpy” and “smelly,” BBC reports.

“It’s good milk and I’ve used it for years,” she said. “I use four cartons every week and I had bought a big batch of it with the sell-by date of 2022. But I noticed when I opened it it was full of lumps and really smelly.

She publicized the issue on her TikTok channel and the videos received millions of views and support from other TikTok users who said they were experiencing the same issues with the milk.

Lidl Refuses Recall, Refund After Lumpy Oat Milk Reported

At first, Lidl refused to refund Luna the £11.20 she had spent on the milk, but told her their quality assurance team was looking into the issue. She continued to post videos about the milk on TikTok, frustrated it was still on sale. One such video reportedly attracted more than three million views in just a few days.

Eventually, the company sent her a £50 voucher for the store, which she spent on items for a food bank, but continued to refuse to recall the oat milk saying it was not a health hazard.

She then contacted her local environmental health department, which began an investigation into the issue.

But before the investigation could conclude, Lidl recalled the oat milk in question, sending Luna a recall letter to share with her followers.

“I spoke to my local Lidl store manager who did tell me the oat milk had been recalled. I was told that new batches of the same oat milk will be back on the shelves really soon and you can guarantee I’ll be first in line,” Luna told BBC.

A spokesman for Lidl told the BBC: “At Lidl, it is never our intention for a customer to be dissatisfied in any way and we work very closely with our suppliers to ensure that the products in our stores are of the highest possible quality.”

“Following customer feedback we have recalled the affected batch and the product will be back in stores very soon.”

Top Class Actions will continue to monitor this and other food recalls to help keep consumers informed.
