  • Who: Jionchery Water Doodle Mat and TheBigThumb Bear-Shaped Purse have been recalled.
  • Why: The recalls were issued because the products pose a serious choking risk.
  • Where: The products were sold on Amazon’s online marketplace.

A recall has been issued for a couple of children’s products sold in the United Kingdom because they pose a serious choking risk, according to the Office for Product Safety and Standards.

Doodle Mat Recall Issued Over Choking, Suffocation Risk

On 25 March, a recall notice was issued for the Jionchery Water Doodle Mat because of a serious risk of choking and suffocation associated with the product. The choking risk is reportedly due to the product’s small parts, and the suffocation risk occurs because the plastic bag packaging is less than the required thickness.

The Jionchery Water Doodle Mat is a white-centred doodle mat bordered with colourful sea animals, which has an ASIN of B07MKQGT6F.

The product, which is made in China, does not meet the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011 requirements. It has been recalled from end users, and the listing has been removed by Amazon, the Office for Product Safety and Standards notes.

The PSD case number is 2101-0009.

Bear-Shaped Purse Recall Issued Over Choking Risk

The Office for Product Safety and Standards also announced a recall of TheBigThumb bear-shaped purse due to a serious risk of choking due to detachable parts.

TheBigThumb purse is a plush bear-shaped purse or handbag with a zipper top opening and two carry handles. The country of origin is unknown.

The plush bear reportedly has eyes that are detachable using less force than required by the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011. If the eyes become detached, children may put them in their mouth and choke on them.

The ASIN for the plush bear purse is B00EC4NQRE.

As a corrective action, the purse has been removed from Amazon’s online marketplace.

The PSD case number is 2102-0142.

UK Toys Safety Regulations

The Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011 apply to most toys placed on the market on or after 19 August 2011 that are intended for use by children younger than 14 years old. These regulations consider the behaviour of children when determining whether a toy may pose a health or safety risk for a certain age group.

If a toy poses certain potential risks, the manufacturer must include a warning label affixed to the toy or the packaging and instructions for use. It must also inform consumers about ways to avoid potential hazards and risks.

Toy manufacturers are prohibited from placing toys on the market if they fail to comply with the safety requirements during a toy’s foreseeable and normal period of use. If toys that fail to meet the safety requirements are placed on the market, enforcement authorities may issue a withdrawal or recall notice for the noncompliant products.
