Kinder Surprise Egg Recall Overview:

  • Who: Ferrero has expanded its recall of some of its Kinder Surprise eggs.
  • Why: Certain batches of Kinder eggs have been linked to a salmonella outbreak.
  • Where: The recalled Kinder Surprise eggs were sold in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) is advising consumers in the UK not to eat certain Ferrero Kinder Surprise chocolate egg products because they may be contaminated with salmonella.

The new batch of recalled Kinder Surprise chocolate eggs includes Kinder Easter egg hunt kits (150g), Kinder Mini eggs (75g), Kinder schokobons (200g) and 100g Kinder Surprise, BBC News reports. The recalled Kinder chocolates have best-before dates between 20 April and 20 August 2022.

The earlier Kinder Surprise recall included 20g and three-pack eggs with best-before dates from 11 July to 7 October 2022.

All of the recalled Kinder egg products were reportedly manufactured in the same Belgian factory.

The FSA says that consumers who have chocolates from the recalled batches should not eat them. They may contact Ferrero for a full refund. The recalled Kinder eggs will be removed from shelves and notices will be posted in stores to alert customers to the Ferrero recall.

Kinder Egg Recall Issued Following Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Chocolates

Sixty-three people in the United Kingdom reportedly became ill due to the presence of salmonella linked to Kinder Surprise eggs. Most of the individuals affected were young children. There have also been reports of consumers in Ireland, France, Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands becoming ill after consuming Kinder Surprise eggs.

Ferrero quickly recalled the products over concerns that they could cause sickness. The chocolate company notes that none of the Kinder products had tested positive for salmonella but made a “precautionary decision” to extend the recall.

Dr. Lesley Larkin of the UK Health Security Agency told the BBC that salmonella symptoms may include diarrhoea, fever, nausea, stomach cramps and vomiting. The symptoms “typically resolve themselves within a few days,” she said.

Severe salmonella symptoms may require hospitalization, particularly in young children and individuals with weakened immune systems, according to The Independent. Anyone with symptoms should wash their hands thoroughly to avoid spreading the bacteria to others.

Tina Potter, the head of incidents at the FSA, expressed concern to The Independent many parents have already bought Kinder Surprise eggs as Easter treats without realizing they may have been recalled.

“So we would urge parents and guardians of children to check if any products already in their home are affected by this recall,” Ms. Potter said.

The UK Health Security Agency, Public Health Scotland, Public Health Wales and Public Health Agency Northern Ireland are currently investigating the potential Kinder Surprise egg salmonella contamination.
