Toddler Musical Instrument Product Recalls Overview:

  • Who: The UK Office for Product Safety and Standards is recalling two different musical instruments for children due to a choking risk.
  • Why: The products do not meet national safety standards and have parts that pose the risk of choking and strangulation.
  • Where: The recall is nationwide.

Two musical toys for children are being recalled as they present a risk of choking, strangulation and asphyxiation for toddlers.

Early Educational Music Toy Recalled

On Apr. 6, the Office for Product Safety and Standards issued a recall for the Lictin Early Educational Music Toy as the product poses a risk of strangulation and asphyxiation.

The product is a musical multifunctional xylophone board set with a toy phone and mirror. It is marketed to children 18 months and older.

“The toy presents a risk of strangulation due to excessively long cords and a risk of asphyxiation due to insufficiently thick plastic packaging,” the recall states.

The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

The product name is the Lictin Educational Music Toy 4 in 1 Kid Musical Instruments Learning Piano Instruments Toys with Light Xylophone Phone Sound Toy Set for Baby.

“The toy poses a serious risk of strangulation as the toy phone cords touch at their tangle points when the gauge X is in place and have combined lengths greater than the maximum authorized value of 300mm,” the testing agents said.

Thus, the product does not meet the requirements of the Toys Safety Regulations 2011.

The product was sold on Amazon, the recall says. It has been recalled from end users and the listing removed by Amazon.

6-in-1 Musical Toy Also Recalled

On Apr. 6, the Office for Product Safety and Standards also issued a recall for a 6-in-1 toddler musical toy instrument set as it poses a serious risk of choking and strangulation, the recall notice says.

The product is a colorful drum kit with printed cartoon characters and a blue strap that can be worn around the neck. It was sold on eBay.

The toy poses a serious risk of choking as when tested according to the impact test, the recall says. During the impact test, the maracas broke, releasing the marbles which fit entirely within the small parts cylinder.

“A young child may place the marbles into their mouth and choke,” the recall says.

Also, the strap of the drum intended to be worn fully around the neck forms a fixed loop that has no breakaway feature, which poses a strangulation hazard to young children.

The product does not meet the requirements of the Toys Safety Regulations 2011, the recall says.

The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

The product has been recalled from end users and removed from eBay.

The news comes as three teether and soother products are being recalled nationwide by the UK Office for Product Safety and Standards as they pose the risk of choking or strangling babies. Three children’s pull along toys were also recalled in the UK over concerns they presented a choking and strangulation risk.
