Third chicken recall issued over salmonella concerns

UPDATE:

  • 16 March 2021, the Food Safety Authority (FSA) of Ireland issued a new recall concerning four additional SFC chicken products over salmonella concerns.

Adding to multiple recalls already issued over Southern Fried Chicken (SFC) products this year, the food safety regulatory agency in Ireland issued another recall of four more products that reportedly tested positive for salmonella.

The FSA of Ireland’s notice indicates that this new recall includes the SFC Take Home Boneless Bucket, 650g, SFC Southern Fried Chicken Burgers, 228g, SFC Chicken Poppets, 190g, SFC Southern Fried Chicken Strips, 155g. These recalled products have best before dates up to and including 30 June 2022.

As with the other SFC salmonella recalls, the FSA advises consumers not to eat the recalled products. This additional recall comes after five people reportedly died after eating the contaminated poultry.

SFC has issued several other recalls related to salmonella contamination since mid-February, reports The Sun. The recalled chicken products are sold at popular supermarkets, such as Tesco, Sainbury’s, and B&M.

Though no legal action has been taken yet, Top Class Actions will monitor the developments of this recall in the interest of consumer safety.

The FSA’s recall notice states that this recall extends an earlier one on SFC Poppets to include all batch codes with best before dates of 24 Sept. and 31 Oct. 2021, along with all batch codes of SFC Boneless Bucket products with best before dates of 28 Nov. 2021.

While the FSA recommends consumers return any recalled chicken products for a full refund, the agency’s notice states that, if consumers followed the cooking instructions correctly, any salmonella present should have been killed.

“We are encouraging consumers to follow cooking instructions and practise good hygiene to avoid cross contamination and contracting salmonellosis, to protect themselves and their families.”

In addition, the FSA’s recall notice says that the brand, SFC, is undergoing further investigation and that consumers will be notified if salmonella is found in additional products.

These most recent recalls are the latest in a series of reports of salmonella-tainted chicken products. In February, The Sun reported that nearly 500 people across the UK had been hospitalised with salmonella poisoning, many children under the age of 16. The salmonella was reportedly traced to poultry products shipped from Poland and sold at major supermarkets for months.

In addition to the recall on SFC Chicken Poppets and the SFC Take-Home Boneless Buckets, a recall for Vestey Foods’ Chick Inn 32 Jumbo Chicken Nuggets has also been issued over salmonella.

Experts told The Sun that, while salmonella poisoning is usually mild, it can cause severe health issues in the very young, elderly, and those with compromised immune systems.

“Symptoms of a Salmonella infection include diarrhoea, stomach cramps and sometimes vomiting and fever. Anyone who is concerned about symptoms should contact their GP or out of hours service in the first instance,” Saheer Gharbia, Head of the Gastrointestinal Pathogens Unit of PHE’s National Infection Service told reporters.
